iRacing FFB Settings and Analysis

A graphical tool for analyzing iRacing FFB settings.

Instructions

For each box, set the slider to the correct value. Select the 'i' help button for additional details.

1- Wheelbase - This value depends on your wheel and what power percentage you select in your wheel driver software.

2- Sim Race Car - Each car in iRacing is different and each has a different amount of torque at the steering wheel.

For the cars you drive, find the one that generates the most steering column torque and use that value here. All the other cars will be relative to this.

3- iRacing Max Force - This setting comes down to personal feel and what you like. Oval drivers tend to like a lighter feel than Road racers.

The important thing to remember, is to not drive your wheel so hard that it clips.

Avoid clipping at all costs.

Analysis

1- FFB Wheelbase

Maximum Torque Output (in Nm)

Set this to the maximum sustained turning force your wheelbase can generate.

Manufacturer-rated torque of some popular direct-drive wheelbases:

DD WheelRated Torque
Fanatec CSL DD5 Nm (8 Nm with Boost Kit)
Moza R99 Nm
Fanatec ClubSport DD12 Nm
Moza R1212 Nm
Simagic Alpha15 Nm
Fanatec ClubSport DD+15 Nm
Fanatec Podium DD120 Nm
Moza R2121 Nm
Simucube 2 Pro25 Nm
Fanatec Podium DD225 Nm

Rated figures are peak values. If your wheel driver software limits the output, use that lower value instead.

2- Sim Race Car

Maximum Steering Torque

Set this value to the maximum steering column torque generated by iRacing for your target car (i.e. the Max Torque in Telemetry).

If you use the Atlas Telemetry software, you can find the maximum value by looking at the SteeringWheelTorque parameter.

iRacing can also measure this value for you after driving a few laps, using the "auto" FFB feature.

3- iRacing Max Force Setting

FFB Range

This is the force in Nm, where iRacing will send 100% maximum output to your wheel.

Specific Output

FFB Strength Ratio

This is a calculated ratio between the Max Torque Output your wheel can generate and the iRacing Max Force.

Specific Output = (Max Torque Output) / (iRacing Max Force)

Specific Output is an indicator of how close you are to the magic 1:1 ratio between the car's steering torque and what you actually feel in your hands at the wheel.

Clipping Point Analysis

Explanation

The dotted line shows the car torque output at 1:1, as the steering torque goes up.

The green area shows the output range of your wheelbase. The FFB torque you feel in your hands will never exceed this amount.

The purple line shows the iRacing generated output. If your iRacing settings are such that the generated output tries to go above your wheelbase Nm limit, you will get clipping, and the output will flatline.
